Grateful Dead Manager Rock Scully
Rock Scully, former manager for the Grateful Dead, shared his knowledge and experience with students enrolled in MGMT195 Introduction to the Entertainment Business and MGMT403 Principles of Entertainment Management II. Scully spoke about creating the Grateful Dead Brand through both traditional and non-traditional means. He also spoke about the issues that he and the Grateful Dead faced while securing a record deal despite the band’s resistance to recording standard 3 minutes songs. Moreover, Scully discussed the wide array of challenges that artist managers face while developing, and then maintaining their acts, particularly acts of international fame. Lastly, Rock spent time discussing the many ethical and social issues that stars and their management team must address on a regular basis.
